Penn secretly interviewed Mexican drug lord 'El Chapo'

Wearing a blue tracksuit, the world's most wanted drug kingpin was frogmarched by military officials to a helicopter at Mexico City's global airport, not before the marines turned his expressionless face toward the waiting media for a clear view.

Asked if he would change the world if he could, Guzman said, "For me, the way things are, I'm happy".

Mexican actress Kate del Castillo facilitated the meeting between Sean Penn and Joaquín Guzmán.

The interview was apparently arranged by Mexican actress Kate Del Castillo, according to the magazine.

Penn's interview with Guzman occurred while he was on the run from authorities following his second prison break last July.

Unnamed Mexican officials said Penn's secret meeting helped lead them to the fugitive, who is now back in the high security Altiplano prison.

"Since Guzman Loera has been recaptured, the beginning of the extradition proceedings should begin", the office said in statement. "The day that I don't exist, it won't reduce drug trafficking".

In the interview, Guzman claimed that despite his infamous notoriety as the head of a drug cartel, he was not violent. Guzman faces drug and murder charges there. Penn says he went to extreme measures to maintain secrecy while communicating with El Chapo's people to set the interview up, using burner phones and avoiding contact with federal agents. Accompanying the article is a picture of Penn shaking hands with Guzman.

He is being held in the same maximum security prison from which he escaped.

Pena Nieto and other officials have yet to take a public stance on the potential extradition.

Prosecutors say Guzman is responsible for hundreds of killings and for inciting violence in border cities such as Ciudad Juarez across from El Paso, Texas, in his bid to control shipping routes.

Guzman was captured after a shootout with marines in which five of the kingpin's henchmen were killed and six were captured.

Guzman also boasted about his drug operation: "I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world".

One of Guzman's attorneys, Juan Pablo Badillo, promised a legal battle that could reach the Supreme Court.

"When we had the courage, we looked out the window and saw the soldiers on the ground firing at the garage door until they opened it", said a neighbor.
