Spotty service at popular messaging app WhatsApp on NYE

The main problem appeared to be that the app couldn't connect to the internet, even if the user had a working mobile or Wi-Fi connection.

WhatsApp has not addressed the potential outage on its social channels. One of the biggest countries hit by this WhatsApp Outage has been India, where one of the largest user-base of WhatsApp lives.

The combination of cross-platform availability and avoiding SMS fees has made it a rising star around the world, but that reliance causes issues whenever WhatsApp suffers downtime. Some speculate the many new year messages from Australia and the Southern Hemisphere may be at fault for the outage.

Users across the globe have been complaining that their WhatsApp messages aren't going through. The reports peaked at over 6,000 reports. According to a Whatsapp spokesperson (as quoted to Gadgets 360), "Some people have had trouble accessing WhatsApp for a short period today".

The company, which is owned by Facebook Inc, had earlier said it had completely restored the service and apologised to users for the disruption. While Reuters reported that the outages were contained within Europe and were now fixed, DownDetector is still showing issues across the continent, as well as the Americas.
