5 arrested for assault on Tanzanian, minister denies woman was stripped

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has condemned the incident, termed it "shameful" and sought a detailed report from the Karnataka Government.

Augustine Maiga, the east African nation's Minister for Foreign Affairs told Parliament that the Tanzanian government through its embassy in New Delhi has already written to the Indian government to show the country's concerns over the incidents.

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parmeshwara earlier said that the attack on the Tanzanian student was "not a racial attack".

The student said in a complaint lodged with police on Wednesday that the rioting mob attacked her auto as they drove near the scene of the accident less than an hour later.

The Tanzanian woman was not connected in any way to the road accident and was just passing through in another auto with three friends.

The incident took place after a woman was mowed down on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Sunday. Siddaramaiah has also ordered an inquiry into why the Bengaluru city police delayed filing a complaint and FIR in the matter, though the girl reportedly went to the police station on the same night. The 21-year-old, an architecture student, said she and her friends were out for dinner when their auto was stopped.

"We have arrested the five accused this morning after interrogating them on Wednesday night", Megharikh told AFP.

Tanzanian High Commissioner to India John Kijazi had earlier told ANI that they wanted the police to take strict action and arrest all the culprits.

The Tanzanian envoy demanded that all those who were part of this incident should be fouled out and total security to their students should be guaranteed. "They thrashed us again till we took shelter near some shops", she said.

Congres Vice President Rahul Gandhi stepped in as well, "Rahul Gandhi asks Karnataka Govt to explain and send report immediately", party general secretary Digvijaya Singh said in a series of tweets on Thursday.

Police did not register the case soon after the road mishap and the mob attack, as the victim was not in city for two days since Sunday to record her statement.

He also said that the High Commission has written to the Indian Government, which in turn, has assured them of action.
