Van Gaal: The fans must support us again

The Red Devils churned out a noteworthy performance in their 3-1 win over Derby County in the FA Cup 4th round and now will see themselves take on a Stoke City side that defeated them just last month. European results aside, Van Gaal has recorded 10 goalless stalemates during his 18-month tenure at United.

Louis van Gaal will risk the wrath of Manchester United's fans again on Tuesday when his side resume their push for a top-four Premier League finish against Stoke City.

But the Dutchman has since overseen victory over Derby - and a much-improved performance - in the FA Cup.

Over the course of six weeks, a six-page "love letter" has been sent to Old Trafford and Van Gaal is said to have offered his resignation to the United board.

Next up is a home game against Stoke, and Van Gaal said: "I'm not a stupid man. I'm an intelligent man and I can not predict the atmosphere".

It is also worth noting here that Stoke have beaten Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton this term and have won four and drawn two of their last nine league road games.

With 15 games of the season to go, Leicester City remain the unexpected leaders, but they now face a potentially season-defining run of fixtures, starting with a home game against Liverpool.

That said, Stoke have lost all seven of their previous Premier League matches at Old Trafford and only Chelsea have matched the number of wins (11) that United have recorded against Stoke in the top-flight.

Matteo Darmian (chest), Ashley Young (groin), Marcos Rojo (shoulder), Antonio Valencia (foot) and Luke Shaw (leg) are all injured, leaving United short in numbers at the back.

Another positive from Friday's fine win at Derby was Michael Carrick's return to first-team action.

The visitors are without ex-United defender Ryan Shawcross with a back injury and will also be missing Marc Wilson due to a knee problem.
