Pakistan opt to bat in must-win game, bring in Anwar Ali

Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by five wickets to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Al-Amin bowled two tight overs at the top, giving away just nine runs before returning in the last four overs to give away four and 12, as Bangladesh decently closed out the Pakistan innings for 129 for 7.

In reply, Soumya Sarkar struck an impressive 48 as Bangladesh successfully chased the target scoring 131/5 in 19.1 overs.

But Mohammad Irfan brought in the first breakthrough for Pakistan by taking the wicket of Iqbal. If not for the fightback by Shoaib Malik (41) and Sarfaraz Ahmed (58), Pakistan would have struggled to even reach 100, after they were reeling at 28 for four.

Not many would have expected Pakistan to play as badly as they have in Asia Cup T20 2016, as their defeats to India and Bangladesh were more than just embarrassing. It was a night the Tigers' bowling without their lethal weapon Mustafizur Rahman hardly put a foot wrong after Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat on a wicket that did not have much of the grass that characterised most pitches in this tournament.

Bangladesh player Mahmudullah, who is out of the Asia Cup due to a shoulder injury, is likely to be replaced by Tamim Iqbal.

Malik, fresh from a match-winning unbeaten 63 against the UAE, hit five fours and a six. Pakistan had only managed 20 runs in the first six overs and an attempt to up the ante resulted in the downfall of Umar Akmal, who sliced a Taskin delivery to Shakib at cover.

Earlier, the Afridi-led side had a shocking start as they lost three wickets within the powerplay.

Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Shakib Al Hasan, Imrul Kayes, Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman, Nasir Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Arafat Sunny, Abu Hider, Nurul Hasan.

Pakistan made one change to the team which beat the United Arab Emirates by seven wickets on Monday, recalling fast bowler Anwar Ali for left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz.
