The world’s biggest IPO

In 2006, Chinese bank Industrial and Commercial Bank of China raised $21.9 billion in what then was the World’s biggest share floatation. Not anymore though.
Agricultural Bank of China (Agbank) has been given a go-ahead by the regulators to sell a stake of 14% in a double listing on Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges.
The listing can raise as much as $30 billion for the bank. The size of floatation and the expected money to be raised from the offer appears even more huge because Agbank is considered to be the weakest amongst the four largest banks in China mainly because bulk of its customers come from rural households in China.
The huge amount expected also signifies the constant efforts put in by the Chinese governments to bridge the rural urban divide.

IPL AND SATYAM – Blemish on Indian Corporate governance

IPL, a vision to enhance the brand value of cricket, is today on the front pages of newspapers/tabloids for all wrong reasons. As the dust surrounding the infamous Satyam debacle was settling, the IPL story has raised eyebrows of investors and hoi-polloi over the functioning of businesses in India. Both IPL saga and the Satyam scandal have raised questions on the corporate governance framework, values and ethics of India Inc. Some of the similar points of concern evoked in the both the stories are presented here in the article:
1. Satyam scandal was the result of failure of Independent Directors in discharging their duties effectively. Similarly, the role of governing council of IPL needs to be questioned in the IPL controversy.
2. Vesting of unchecked autonomy in the reigns of business leaders especially aggressive leaders like Lalit Modi & Raju is to be debated. An uncontrolled leash in the hands of these two leaders is doubted by many as the major reason behind these two stories.
3. Indian corporate governance requires independent directors to be completely unrelated to the assets of the company and business of the company in order to bring unbiased opinions to the table. A similar concept needs to be applied to the members of governing council of IPL, ensuring that the members do not own any stake in any of the IPL teams in order to ensure transparency and non-biasness in the working of the IPL.
Surely both the cases have blemished the corporate governance followed by India Inc. The need of the hour today is a well directed effort to make the principle “Walk the Talk” implemented as the above points have been debated and mulled over by the think-tanks numerous times and now is the time to enforce and implement them.

Dodge Viper ACR-X sold out! New Batch to begin?

A power monster that has been feared and actually left out of many a racing series has risen to begin its own special racing series and just like those oh-so-awesome good times, its run had to end as soon as it began. No tragic news here for Chrysler though it might be one for the buying enthusiast as I’m talking about the Dodge Viper ACR-X that was introduced a few months ago and which has now officially been sold out. Given the limited numbers on the make category, this was expected also given its unlimited power and punch on tap.

The car features an 8.4L V10 pumping out 640 BHP. It’s built utilising the expertise of the engineers at SRT and combines the track abilities of the Road-legal bonkers ACR (American Club Racer) and the safety equipment and the even more bonkers track nature of the Viper Competition Coupe. It has factory headers and a low restriction exhaust system, so loud booms are expected every time a cog is shifted up or down with the intervals filled by deep thrummy V10 trumpet galore. The car comes fitted with suspension mods, aero mods, tranny mods et al (What else can one expect, eh?) for better grip and on-road (err, make that track) stability and high speed cornering.

It also has a factory fitted roll cage, fuel cell and racing seat to keep one safe on the track. Dodge CEO Ralph Gilles is known to be thanking the SRT Team and the Viper Nation for supporting the project through out during its announcement a few months ago. Now, he is known to have officially quoted that the first slot of ACR-Xs have all been spoken for and the Viper in all its variants is being shipped to the dealers. Hence, a terrible news for the rich track enthusiast who hasn’t yet signed that cheque. Worries can be safely left out as Gilles has suggested that a new batch of ACR-Xs might be considered given the heavy demand.

Time to tell Google- Don’t be evil

After coming under severe criticism in Europe over collecting private information over unencrypted wireless networks, Google finds itself in yet another trouble. Australian authorities have announced an investigation into whether Google had illegally collected private information from private networks.

In all probability Google will not willingly involve itself in any breach of privacy but the recent incidents adds to the ever growing anxiety about privacy in the digital domain and a growing trend of young technocrats trying to break into private networks without permission.

What does it mean for Google? Even if the interception of data was accidental and not intentional, its high time the company take some extra steps to earn the lost trust of its customers. It also goes without saying that Google has to work closely with the regulating authorities all over the world to ensure that no privacy infringement of similar sort occur in future.

Thus using these printers you can print directly from a web platform say Google Docs or a device like iPad. Each printer costing between $99 and $400 will have its own email address.

Is Hungary going the Greece way?

It has been formally announced. That the economic situation in Hungary is “very grave” and thus there are fairly good chances of the government defaulting on its debt.

This announcement by a spokesman from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban drove forint-the currency of Hungary to its lowest level in a year. The spokesman further said that Hungary finds itself in the current mess because “the previous government manipulated figures and lied about the state of the economy.”

A fact finding panel has been set up to present the valid figures on the current state of the economy and it has been promised that the government will publish an action plan to tackle the situation soon.

Investors are worried, and rightly so about the state of their investments. Another crisis will certainly spell further doom for a worsening debt crisis in Europe.
