3D film “Despicable Me” has topped the charts in Hollywood opening to a superb opening of $60.1 million according to studio estimates. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”, on the other hand, collected $33.4 million on its second weekend and is and is performing quite identically to last year’s Twilight release “New Moon”. “Predator” sold tickets worth over $25.3 million, making it third in the list. “Despicable Me” is a 3-D cartoon and features the voice of Steve Carell.
Summer has brought new hopes to the industry after a lacklustre beginning to the year. Despicable is the first film by Illumination Entertainment, and it has now become the first film, not made by Pixar or DreamWorks Animation to gross such a big opening.
“Whatever else is going on in the marketplace, it’s evident that quality, all-audience films are one of the most powerful opportunities imaginable,” said Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson. “I’m ecstatic that on our first swing we performed at the highest of levels.”
55% of the film’s audience included families who had children under 12. The movie had earlier received very strong reviews in favour of it by critics. The future of the film looks good, and maybe it can gross to about $150 million. That would be a sigh of relief for Universal, which has performed dismally at the box office since last summer!
