The earth shaking news of Simon Cowell’s decision to quit American Idol after this season left the Americans shocked and may be speechless! By now news must have gone down well and many critics are now airing their opinion on the Brit’s role in American Idol. One such critic Ann Powel has written about him in Los Angeles Times. In her writing she has highlighted both his good and bad side which is worth noting.
The music critic agrees that Simon was a fussy Brit on the show who used to use five ridiculous metaphors to describe a bad singer and was seen grinning with his white teeth. But at same time she acknowledges that Simon has managed to change the way Americans think about popular music. Though most of the people call him to be snobbish but it his through his distinct opinions the scope of American music has widened. The critic claims that for more serious music lovers American Idol stood for “puffery and schmaltz” where sincerity and talent don’t count. At the same the music industry saw the retreat of meaningful rock band and the rise of pop star, and the ones which gained popularity were not a maestro. During this transition Simon came who had a very different opinion about music but without fear he confidently aired his superior opinions like an art critic.
But Anne Powell criticized Simon’s decision to quit a sophisticated show like American idol for X- Factor which she calls “campier and more crass than Idol”. The critic feels that Simon is breaking away from high- standard image he has held so far not only for choosing X Factor over Idol but for also promoting the British Singer Susan Boyle which most critics and music fans hates.

Despite coming across as a massive jerk on TV, Simon is actually a great guy. He does a lot for charity. Top bloke.
