There is a prejudice which exists in every film industry of the world that remakes are never as good as the original. Many movies have come and gone, but few exceptions have also sprung up. Perhaps it is out of respect that we add this remake of the 80’s cult classic to the list of exceptions. “The Karate Kid” stars Chinese action legend Jackie Chan, Will’s Smith son Jaden Smith and Taraji P. Henson.
Jaden’s character Dre moves to Beijing with his mother and ends up isolating himself due to the cultural differences that exist between him and his school kids. When he is bullied for the umpteenth time, he decides to learn self defense from the wise Mr. Han so that he can face his fears on his own and the rest as they say is history. The movie’s strength lays in such places as Jackie’s portrayal of the wise taskmaster “Han” and also the calm pace and gradually increasing tempo of the movie. But where the film does falter is in Jaden’s acting department, he is just not natural enough in some portions of the movie. So should you go and see this movie? Give it a go because this movie has its heart set in the right place.
