FIFA WC 2010- The stars that never shone

The reputations will be left to bite the cold dust. The glamour will be smashed to pieces, At the end of it all, what will live is a simple game which knows nothing beyond those 120 yards on which it is played.

When the likes of Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Kaka and Didier Drogba step on a football field, a billion eyes watch in anticipation. For these are some of the best players the game has ever produced. May be their absence means an absence of those delightful moments which make it look like more of a fairytale than a game. That ambition, that speed, that velocity, that ferocity, that unbelievable talent to find the net from anywhere, that golden touch that looks effortless.

And suddenly, as all these stars disappeared into the wilderness, their skill looks ordinary and their talent looks common. Not that they can’t strike back again. They are too good to sit back and take a stick. But amongst other things, what this World Cup has shown is that if one legend moves, another always emerges to fill the gap. Hail the Mezut Oezils and Thomas Muellers of this world.
