Mandela bereaved: Family tragedy makes him miss opening ceremony of World Cup

South African icon Nelson Mandela was not able to attend the opening session of the new edition of the world cup due to the tragic death of his 13 year old great granddaughter in a car accident. She was returning from a concert in Soweto, South Africa on the eve of the world cup when this incident occurs.
The Mandela family has asked for privacy as they mourn this tragedy. We share our condolences with the legendary “Madiba” and his family. We pray for her soul and may his great granddaughter rest in peace.
The world cup celebrations went on as scheduled even though the spirit was dampened by his absence. There are even talks of sports channel ESPN covering the event in glorious 3D for the first time in history of television. Many celebrities from all over the world have converged for the Cup and the first match between the hosts and Mexico resulted in a 1-1 draw. We do hope the beautiful game continues to enthrall us without any more tragic interruptions.
