In what could have been a major terrorist attack just days ahead of the New Year, a Nigerian suspect who later confessed to his links with the dreaded Al -Qaeda, was today nabbed on board an U.S commercial flight upon its landing in Detroit.
It was learned through further interrogation of the suspect that he was attempting to blow up the flight mid - air and the United States officials have already labeled this as an attempted terrorist attack. The commercial Delta flight which fortuitously escaped this terror bid, took off from Egypt with 273 passengers and 11 crew members on board.
As per eyewitness accounts it was barely twenty minutes before the flight was supposed to land at the Detroit airport that some passengers heard strange popping noises like some crackers going off. It was further learned from the passengers and airline officials that just as the suspect was attempting to blow up the flight mid - air one of them lunged at him and subdued him in the nick of time.
The man had ‘some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite’ in a bag strapped to his body, U.S. officials told NBC News. Other officials told NBC station WDIV-TV of Detroit that the device was a mixture of powder and liquid, which failed to ignite when the passenger tried to detonate it during the plane’s descent into Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
A close call indeed for the 273 passengers!
