Who is Regina Benjamin?

Regina Benjamin is a physician who has been chosen by President Barack Obama for the position of Surgeon General of the United States. Regina Benjamin runs a nonprofit medical clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama.

Dr. Benjamin notably became the first African-American woman on the American Medical Association’s board of trustees when she was elected to the post in 1995.

In 1990, Regina founded the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic to serve the Gulf Coast fishing community of Bayou La Batre, Alabama, a village of approximately 2,500 residents devastated twice in the past decade by Hurricanes Georges, in 1998, and Katrina, in 2005. Despite scarce resources, Benjamin has painstakingly rebuilt her clinic after each disaster and set up networks to maintain contact with patients scattered across multiple evacuation sites.

Dr. Benjamin was the subject of a Reader’s Digest article that chronicled her efforts to rebuild the clinic after Hurricane Katrina.
