In a move which is seen as a direct answer to Microsoft’s Bing, Google has finally made available the option to have a themed background on its search engine site. Microsoft launched Bing, a year back on June 3 2009, to revive its search business, which it almost completely lost to Google.
Google launched the feature a couple of days earlier, but retrieved it within 14 hrs Siting technical issues. Google later confirmed that some links were not accessible under the new feature and further added that it was made available only for 24hrs on a trial basis. The feature now has been made fully available and the bugs reportedly have been fixed. The move by the Google is being seen as a direct reply to Microsoft’s Bing, which displays a professionally shot Picture as a background Image. Google though has gone a step further, and gives its users a full freedom in choosing the picture of their choice as the background. They even have the option to choose their own picture from their Computer or from their Google Picasa web album.
Google has recently also made un upgrade to its search indexing system, and finally incorporated its beta product Caffeine, whereby it displays fresher results based on the recent content being uploaded and is at least 50% faster. Meanwhile Microsoft’s Bing features a query based search results, and was well received by IT professionals when launched. Bing’s concept of background feature was also well received by its users, and perhaps helped it revive its search business, gaining it its dwindling market share in the process. Meanwhile reports suggest Microsoft is working on Search Indexing system which would be based on Silverlight 4.0 and would allow users to actually submit URLs to be blocked from showing up on SERPS and as well as those that should be prioritized, and is expected to set a new benchmark in the search business.
